The Diplomatic Dog Fundamentals

Whether you have a shy, fearful rescue or an out-of-control adolescent with bad habits, this program for the budding Diplomatic Dog will help you communicate clearly and consistently with your dog. We’ll use the foundation exercises to create protocols and structures that, like in human diplomacy, ensure relationships and interactions are more predictable and ultimately make life less stressful for both you and your dog. This program covers:

The Foundation Exercises:

  • Heel - to help your dog walk calmly around life’s distractions (Squirrel! Truck! Dog!)

  • Sit/stay & down/stay - to help your dog contain himself and prevent bolting out the door, jumping and overly enthusiastic greetings (Visitors! Mailman! UPS!)

  • Go to Place - to help your dog settle so that you can do your work in peace or just chill out together (Throw the ball! Feed me! Pet Me! Give Me Attention!).

  • Drop/Leave It - to help your dog give up items that don’t belong to him or are dangerous for him (Sock! Chicken Bone! Mine!)

  • Come When Called - to help your dog stay connected to you and return to you as soon as you call him (Sorry I’m late, but I got here as soon as I wanted to!)

Leadership Practices:

  • Understanding how your behavior affects your dog’s behavior

  • Creating protocols to establish rules and structure

  • Communicating clearly and consistently with your dog

  • Finding the right balance of discipline and affection and physical and mental stimulation

Olive

Kathleen broke down our goals into manageable chunks, and together we mastered a long list of skills we use everyday. She always demonstrated the training technique first, and coached me along as I learned her techniques. She returned my phone calls and emails between lessons each week when I had questions, helping me stay on track and keeping me from getting frustrated. It quickly became obvious how easy it is to train a dog when you have the right person guiding you.
